Gogo In-flight internet "service"

Today I cancelled my Gogo In-flight internet subscription. I had been paying $39.95 per month for the all you can eat plan, and believe me, it was barely worth it. Then, a couple weeks ago, I got an email from Gogo indicating they were going to raise my plan by 25% to $49.95 per month. A 25% increase for a product that was barely usable past anything but email. This is a move from an arrogant company, and it's going to bite them. When I canceled, they asked why, of course, and I told them how crappy their service is. They made no offer to extend the $39.95 price, so they've lost me as a customer for life. Well, maybe if they offered the same service for $19.95 a month I might consider it, but that's the only way it would be worth it.

First Post

Welcome to the Old Tech Guy Blog! This is my first post, and to be honest, I'm not all that sure what I'm going to write about. What I hope to do is talk about being an old tech guy, the challenges, the attitudes we face, stuff like that. I'll also be giving my perspective on current tech news and events so be warned! These are only my opinions!

First, a little about me. I'm a 56 yr old tech guy, which in a lot of industries isn't *that* old (I keep telling myself that) but it is definitely old in tech. I've been in the industry since 1986; sometimes I can't believe it's been that long. I've done everything from field service to desktop support to LAN administration to software development. I'm currently a consultant working with electronic medical record systems (EMRs), writing a lot of SQL queries. Being a consultant definitely has it's challenges. Generally the work comes in 3-6 month contracts, so it means finding new jobs a lot. To be honest, I don't feel I've run into any age discrimination. As I get older I worry about that, but so far I haven't sensed it. One reason might be because I'm in the medical field, rather than a true IT shop. I hope that's not the case, but I think age discrimination is something we face in the tech industry.

One 'advantage' of being a consultant is I get jobs all over the country, which means most interviews are done on the phone. During a phone interview, they can't see my striking grey hair, the laugh lines, the bags under my eyes. I never try to hide my age, but doing phone interviews makes them focus more on what I'm *saying*, rather than how I look. Is that a reason I haven't seen any obvious age discrimination? Maybe. It doesn't hurt there's a lot of demand in the EMR space either.

I plan to keep posting here, even if I don't get any followers. I think there's some therapeutic value to putting words down. If I get followers, all the better, but it doesn't matter to me. I just plan to have fun and talk about issues important to me, because, after all, it's all about me!
